Additionally, it enables researchers to traverse the boundaries of a more specialised area of study than an already well-established one. It is an interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on the production and manipulation of nanoscale materials via scaling down the particle size scale from micrometres to nanometers (1–100 nm). They provide excellent options in the fields of health, industry, and medicine as they present a new vision for the treatment of medical conditions thanks to the fact that the particle size may be reduced, which gives them a distinct prospective characteristic. Researchers continue to be interested in finding new uses for metal nanoparticles (NPs) as the field of nanotechnology advances since these particles display distinctive properties. The public is interested in several different types of metal nanoparticles, including silver NPs. Synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can be used in a wide variety of contexts, such as spectrally selective coatings for the absorption of solar energy, as intercalation material for electrical batteries, as optical receptors, as catalysts in chemical processes, and so on. Antibacterial and antifungal properties are only two of the biological uses of silver nanoparticles that have been the subject of much research. AgNPs are known to be cytotoxic to both normal and cancer cells in mammals, and the modalities of interactions of AgNPs have been examined in a variety of prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. AgNPs are known to be cytotoxic to both normal and cancer cells in humans. The cytotoxic effects of silver ions have been seen and documented in a variety of cell lines. Silver nanoparticles have become important research topics due to the numerous applications they have in the fields of industry, agriculture, and biomedicine, as well as their excellent anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-coagulant, and photo-catalytic properties due to their chemical stability and good biocompatibility. The most important focus of this review is on recent advancements and trends in the field of AgNPs for use in biomedical applications. Algal biomass has a high organic content and a variety of metabolic properties that make it a promising resource for managing wastewater and sequestering CO₂, in addition to producing profitable biobased products. However, the operation and valorization of algae biomass on a large scale are accompanied by significant costs and setbacks. Therefore, the transition towards a biobased economy requires this study to examine emerging technologies that could utilize algae biomass as an industrialized feedstock from the wastewater settings. A comprehensive analysis of various green technologies of producing high-value products (lipids and hydrocarbons) from algae biomass was reviewed. The fundamental principles that limit the cultivation , extraction, and conversion of different types of algae biomasses for commercialization are discussed. Furthermore, the challenges, future research directions and potential opportunities of valorizing algae biomass was highlighted. It was noted that, exploring algae biomass towards sustainable waste management with resources recovery is viable for industrialization.Item Academic training evaluation of building technology programme(Department of Construction Economics and Management, University of Cape Town, 2022-08-01) Obaju, Biodun; Fagbenle, Olaposibo; Amusan, Lekan; Olaniran, TemitopeTraining evaluation is one method through which tertiary institutions examine the effectiveness of the training they deliver in order to establish their students' readiness for the workplace. However, several higher institutions' evaluation methods have been confined to assessment in tests and exams without considering the knowledge and competencies acquired by students via training in fulfilling workplace expectations. Hence, the study assessed the training received by Building technology graduates in construction management and construction technology courses. The study adopted the Kirkpatrick model's first two stages of training evaluation (Reaction and Learning levels) with a questionnaire distributed to purposively selected Building technology graduates from two polytechnics in Southwestern Nigeria using a snowball sampling technique. Data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistical tools. The study's findings show that respondents were satisfied with the training acquired and possess the basic competency from the training. However, the graduates lack sufficient knowledge of laws and regulations governing construction work, the use of computer programme for planning and scheduling projects and the ability to use tools and equipment for construction work. The study findings imply that building graduates would be unable to work adequately in the construction industry without additional training, putting enormous strain on construction firms to re-training them to meet their expectations. Programs for innovative city waste can help raise proficiency, diminish costs, and improve the aesthetics of open places as cities endeavor to oversee waste in public regions effectively. This study enhances intelligent waste systems by developing innovative technologies and software as additional tools for collection. This research demonstrates how the SQERT model, a periodic trend analysis report specific to projects, will be used to assess the intelligent waste management system and the proposed software technology. This study examines how augmented reality can be used to transform the DUT E-learning system from a three-standalone system into a unified system. The study illustrates how the Business Analysis Core Concept Model, a conceptual framework for business analysis, would be employed to analyze the proposed augmented reality system and the current DUT e-learning model. Additionally, the use cases of the three standalone platforms that make up the current DUT E-learning are contrasted with a single augmented reality E-learning system.Item Anaerobic treatment of slaugterhouse wastewater: evaluating operating conditions(WIT Press, 2019-12-11) Chollom, Martha Noro; Rathilal, Sudesh; Swalaha, Feroz Mahomed; Bakare, Babatunde F.; Tetteh, Emmanuel K.The aim of the study was to elucidate the effect of process parameters on the performance of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) that was treating slaughterhouse wastewater. The UASB reactor was operated continuously under mesophilic conditions to evaluate its performance with respect to the removal of organics and, at the same time, monitor biogas production. Organic loading rate (OLR) was varied while keeping the hydraulic retention time (HRT) constant. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency higher than 75% was achieved at an OLR of 9 kg.COD.m-3.d-1, with a HRT of 12 h. Bulking sludge problems were not observed during the reactor operation period. Stability of the treatment process was achieved by the natural buffering of the system due to the produced alkalinity and also due to the characteristics of the wastewaters which was found to be rich in proteins and fatty acids.Item An analysis of the design features of three mixed-mode courses in a master’s degree programme(2005) Pratt, Deirdre DeniseThis paper suggests that a system of communicative functions can be used to provide a framework for analysing course design, and illustrates this with reference to three mixed-mode courses intended for use in a master’s programme in Computer Assisted Language Teaching (CALT). The design principle is based on an architecture of functions necessary for effective communication, namely, the contextual, ideational, interactive social and reflexive functions. Because the principle is descriptive rather than prescriptive, and is thought to identify a deep structure of human functioning common to all social interaction, it provides a template for analyse of course design which can be applied within different educational paradigms. The template offers the course designer moving into a new milieu or medium the opportunity to gain a fresh perspective on the process of instructional design. The pandemic augmented many trends in employee work arrangement that had a major impact on businesses and employee health and safety and one of these trends is hybrid work arrangement. Globally, employers, government officials, health organisations, unions, and professional associations struggled to stay compliant. Occupational exposure and working conditions can have an undesirable or positive effect on the safety, health, and well-being of workers. Therefore, this study aims to analyse the effect of post-COVID office hybrid work arrangement on employee health and safety: a case study of Uni4 Online Westville Durban South Africa. Taking into consideration the aim of the study the following objectives guide the study i) to understand what hybrid work arrangement is. ii) to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected employee work arrangement, iii) determine the perceived challenges and opportunities in the application of hybrid work arrangement iv) make recommendations on the effective application of hybrid work arrangement at Uni4 Online Westville Durban South Africa. For this study, a secondary approach to data collection was undertaken. In this regard a total of 15 relevant articles were searched from different databases and search engines, The keywords were explored in three databases namely, Google Scholar, Ebsco-host, and Emerald. The findings from the literature showed that post-COVID hybrid work arrangements can affect workers psychologically because physical distancing through staying at home contributes to isolation and a lack of distinction between work life and home life. Furthermore, it was deduced that hybrid work arrangement creates challenges for workers because it creates fewer opportunities for career development and promotions because of weakened ties. In addition, workers in a hybrid work arrangement who were more dependent on others and generally received more feedback had fewer positive appraisals than those with more independent roles. The study recommends that both employees and managers need to develop new skills and capabilities to adjust to the new ways of working and utilising the prospects of Post COVID hybrid work. Also, firms should be concerned about sustainability implications when developing guidelines for Post COVID hybrid work, both in terms of social and ecological aspects.Item Application of AI for frequency normalization of solar PV-thermal electrical power system(IEEE, 2020-08) Estrice, Milton; Sharma, Gulshan; Akindeji, Kayode Timothy; Davidson, Innocent EwaenGrid-connected solar-PV schemes have become a significant part of the energy balance in the power system to satisfy the growing request for clean, affordable energy. This study attempts to link solar-PV generation with conventional thermal power plants and to integrate the control zone resulting in a hybrid solar PV-thermal electric power system using an AC tie line. An analysis of the frequency dynamics for varying load conditions of the interconnected system is studied. Diverse approaches of proportional, integral, and proportional-integral fuzzy logic built controllers are design and tested in order to match the electric power with variable loads of the system and hence to normalize the frequency ofthe system in shortest possible time. A comparative analysis of the design topologies is conducted out for the PV-Thermal scheme. A major element of any e-learning strategy, is e-assessment. In this digital era, academics should be encouraged to envisage various forms of e-assessment and then build and evaluate them using student feedback. A combination of information technologies together with e-learning strategies can enhance the learning and teaching process by supporting traditional, authentic, and alternative assessment practices. Benefits of e-assessments may be convenience and flexibility to learn anytime and anywhere. However, practitioners need to assess whether those benefits contribute to student learning, that students should not be disadvantaged by any e-assessment procedure and these assessments should be valid and reliable. This paper reports the findings of whether authentic e-assessments enhance student learning in comparison to the traditional assessment methods. Using a descriptive research method, this study investigated the perceptions of a group of students that were exposed to both an authentic e-assessment and the traditional closed-book assessment methods. Data were solicited from participants using a questionnaire survey instrument. A comparison of student perceptions between the different forms of assessments revealed that they are very keen on authentic e-assessments as it relates to situations experienced in the real-world. These assessments also measure the students' ability to apply the knowledge or skills, but more importantly, that it is used as a vehicle for student learning.Item Autonomous classification and spatial location of objects from stereoscopic image sequences for the visually impaired(IEEE, 2022-07-20) Sivate, Themba M.; Pillay, Nelendran; Moorgas, Kevin; Singh, NavinOne of the main problems faced by visually impaired individuals is the inability or difficulty to identify objects. A visually impaired person usually wears glasses that help to enlarge or focus on nearby objects, and therefore heavily relies on physical touch to identify an object. There are challenges when walking on the road or navigating to a specific location since the vision is lost or reduced thereby increasing the risk of an accident. This paper proposes a simple portable machine vision system for assisting the visually impaired by providing auditory feedback of nearby objects in real-time. The proposed system consists of three main hardware components consisting of a single board computer, a wireless camera, and an earpiece module. YOLACT object detection library was used to detect objects from the captured image. The objects are converted to an audio signal using the Festival Speech Synthesis System. Experimental results show that the system is efficient and capable of providing audio feedback of detected objects to the visually impaired person in real-time.Item Availability and operability in optical transport network architectures(IEEE, 2020-08) Gomba, Masimba; Nleya, Bakhe; Chidzonga, Richard F.A typical optical transport network interconnects multitudes of offices. It is also key not only to accommodating continuously escalating traffic levels, but also to maintain a consistent Quality of Service, operability as well availability. This can only be achieved through the provisioning of effective and dynamic network control. In this paper, we explore the various operational issues such as incompatibilities in terms of physical layer transmission requirements and other control and management challenges emerging in present and future/ (envisaged) optical transport networks.Item Balancing between demand and trading in microgrids(IEEE, 2020-01) Gomba, Masimba; Chidzonga, Richard; Nleya, Bakhe; Khumalo, PhilaniThe envisaged future generation power or smart grid (SG) will incorporate ICT technologies as well as innovative ideas for advanced integrated and automated power systems. The bidirectional information and energy flows within the envisaged advanced SG together with other aiding devices and objects, promote a new vision to energy supply and demand response. Meanwhile, the gradual shift to the next generation fully fledged SGs will be preceded by individual isolated microgrids voluntarily collaborating in the managing of all the available energy resources within their control to optimally serve both demand and distribution. In so doing, innovative applications will emerge that will bring numerous benefits as well as challenges in the SG. This paper introduces a power management approach that is geared towards optimizing power distribution, trading, as well as storage among cooperative microgrids (MGs). The initial task is to formulate the problem as a convex optimization problem and ultimately decompose it into a formulation that jointly considers user utility as well as factors such as MG load variance and associated transmission costs. It is deduced from obtained analytical results that the formulated generic optimization algorithm characterizing both aggregated demand and response from the cooperative microgrids assist greatly in determining the required resources hence enabling operational cost viability of the entire system.Item Building knowledge absorptive capacity in South African public companies through recruitment practices(Academic Conferences International Ltd, 2023-01-01) Phaladi, Malefetjane PhineasMost state-owned companies (SOCs) in South Africa are in a perpetual struggle to recruit human resources and replenish their intangible knowledge asset losses that are largely due to high employee turnover. The study is interdisciplinary in nature, presenting a strong link between recruitment practice, employee turnover, knowledge loss and knowledge absorptive capacity. The research project used a mixed methods exploratory sequential design by gathering in-depth qualitative data through interviews with 20 human resource managers in 9 SOCs. Survey data was collected from a 25% response rate to the 585 distributed questionnaires. The survey instrument was tested for reliability with a Cronbach’s alpha at 0.94. The qualitative data extracted through the interviews were analyzed thematically using Atlas.ti software, whilst the quantitative data were analysed using Statistical Analysis Software (SAS). The findings revealed that due to increased human resources mobility, human resource management (HRM) establishments in many SOCs were in a perpetual struggle to fill vacancies in mission-critical areas. Knowledge-loss induced by human resource attrition was a serious challenge in most SOCs. On a positive note, the study revealed that recruitment practices were knowledge-driven, largely because they supported SOCs in the sourcing of the required company-specific human and knowledge resources, albeit some extant challenges. The study concluded that HRM recruitment practices build knowledge absorptive capacity in South African SOCs.Item The changing landscape of teaching and learning : how adult students view online approaches at a university in South Africa(2023-11-17) Thusi, Zamalotshwa Florence Thembisile; Tawiah, SampsonAs university lecturers of an education program, we aim to enhance community college lecturers' social and economic well-being, empowering them with skills for employment and community development. We respond to the need to train lecturers and prospective Adult and Community Education lecturers in South Africa. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our traditional content delivery method has shifted to online teaching and learning. This shift can negatively and positively impact adult students' learning processes. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the perceptions of students involved in online teaching and learning approaches. To achieve this, we adopted a qualitative approach and an experimental design, collecting data from 22 students deemed information-rich. Thematic content analysis was used to analyze the data collected, and the results positively reflected the relevance of the education program and online teaching and learning. Based on the emergent results, we recommend proper funding and close monitoring of the entire education programme to ensure quality delivery using online approaches.Item Circumstantial discussion on security and privacy protection using cloud computing technology(IEEE, 2022-04-28) Lourens, Melanie Elizabeth; Naureen, Ayesha; Guha, Shouvik Kumar; Ahamad, Shahanawaj; Dharamvir; Tripathi, VikasCloud computing is becoming a demanding technology due to its flexibility, sensibility and remote accessibility. Apart from these applications of cloud computing, privacy and security are two terms that pose a circumstantial discussion. Various authors have argued on this topic that cloud computing is more secure than other data sharing and storing methods. The conventional data storing system is a computer system or smartphone storage. The argument debate also states that cloud computing is vulnerable to enormous types of attacks which make it a more concerning technology. This current study has also tried to draw the circumstantial and controversial debate on the security and privacy system of cloud computing. Primary research has been conducted with 65 cloud computing experts to understand whether a cloud computing security technique is highly secure or not. An online survey has been conducted with them where they provided their opinions based on the security and privacy system of cloud computing. Findings showed that no particular technology is available which can provide maximum security. Although the respondents agreed that blockchain is a more secure cloud computing technology; however, the blockchain also has certain threats which need to be addressed. The study has found essential encryption systems that can be integrated to strengthen security; however, continuous improvement is required.Item COIL4COIL : building expertise and capacity in faculty at Durban University of Technology, South Africa(Erasmus+ National Agency for EU Higher Education Cooperation, DAAD, 2020-05) Orton, Penelope Margaret; Cooke, Lesley Anne; Morton, JoelDurban University of Technology (DUT) has, as two of its strategic objectives, internationalisation of the curriculum and e learning. In pursuit of these two strategic objectives, DUT became the first African university to join the State University of New York (SUNY) Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) global network in 2016. At DUT, the graduate attributes include critical and creative thinkers who work independently and collaboratively, knowledgeable practitioners, effective communicators, culturally, environmentally and socially aware within a local and global context and active and reflective learners. COIL/Virtual Engagement (VE) offers opportunities to develop these attributes in students and enhances their soft skills, which are so necessary in the workplace. COIL/VE has allowed students and academic staff from DUT to engage in collaborative learning experiences using technology and to date we have had approximately 20 projects across different departments and collaborating with programmes in New York State, Mexico, Brazil and the Netherlands. DUT is currently, expanding their international partnering network beyond the SUNY COIL network. When new ideas and ways of doing things, changes are introduced it is suggested that the innovators, those who jump on board first, are approximately 2.5% of the staff, then the early adopters are approximately 13.5% of the staff and the early majority 34%. This is an indication of work that needs to be done, in the University to get academic staff to embrace the concept of COIL/VE and introduce projects into their programmes and modules. In an effort to roll out COIL/VE to the academic fraternity at DUT, we have adopted a number of initiatives with mixed success. A COIL Clinic is held every week which is a “drop in” opportunity where academic staff can drop in to have a chat about COIL/VE – partnering, instructional design, ideas they may have or just an opportunity to explore the concept a little more. Varieties of workshops are held where the concept of COIL/VE is explained, some ideas of the use of technology are shared and participants have time to discuss and conceptualise a project for themselves. In some workshops, academic staff who have had successful projects are invited to share their experience with participants. There are occasions where the COIL/VE project has resulted in inbound mobility of an international partner and their expertise and/or experience is shared with DUT academic staff. In order to develop academic staff capacity a blended short course was developed to run over 5 weeks but was not a great success and this needs to be reconsidered and redesigned. A face-to-face session was held which was well attended but the online component was not well “attended.” Following this and in discussion with a European colleague an activity was offered once off between a European university, one in the United States and DUT. Academic staff were invited to a virtual meeting on Zoom and they had a short introduction to COIL/VE and then went into “breakout rooms” to discuss with international colleagues ideas for possible projects. Following which they all came back together and shared some of the discussions. From this exercise academic staff were encouraging the formation of a community of practice which would meet regularly. One of the constraints with the North South partnerships is the semester differences. In the Northern Hemisphere the 1st semester is from September through to about March/April. In the Southern Hemisphere the 1st semester is from February to June. This means that the first half of the year is a better time to collaborate North South with project development happening in the second half of the year for Implementation in the next year. This is true for the collaboration on staff development too where from June to September staff are away on vacation at various times during those 3 months. The last activity, which we have suggested as a strategy, to develop academic staff capacity is a journal club. This activity would help engage academic staff in the pedagogy and scholarship of COIL/VE and would go some way to developing the scholarship opportunities emanating out of COIL/VE projects. DUT COIL/VE is supported by an Educational Technologist who is able to assist academic staff with technology that assists with academic development in the use of technology in teaching. Durban University of Technology is in the initial stages of its COIL/VE trajectory and has so far, tapped into the 2.5% of teaching innovators and now needs to move the initiative into developing the next level of academic staff who, could be considered, early adopters. The opportunities to develop a community of practice and a community of enquiry, to progress the use of models and frameworks to teach with technology and to develop the scholarship of teaching and learning in COIL/VE are exciting.Item Comparative analysis of specific energy consumption and energy consumption benchmarking in galvanising plants(IEOM Society International, 2022-08-04) Dewa, MendonThe inadequacy of sustainable energy is endlessly posing major challenges globally. The issue of energy optimisation is indispensable for manufacturing sector, particularly for a hot-dip galvanising process where galvanising furnaces are the significant energy users. This study is aimed at comparative analysis of specific energy consumption and energy consumption benchmarking in four galvanising plants with the view to necessitate the identification of best practices. Energy baselines were used as quantitative reference points to compare energy performance indicators and quantify fluctuations in energy performance during the baseline and reporting periods. A quantitative analysis was also conducted to benchmark four galvanising facilities on factors that included the electricity/zinc ratio, electricity /dips ratio and product tonnage/zinc used ratio. The results revealed improved performance for plant 4 over time relative to the baseline consumption when compared to plants 1, 2 and 3. Plant 4 also outperformed other facilities after the energy efficiency interventions in terms of electricity/zinc ratio and electricity/ product tonnage ratio. Given the disparity between the results of specific energy consumption (SEC) for the four plants, it was concluded that SEC alone should not be used as an energy performance indicator.Item Comparative study of binary classifiers for reducing false negative detection of melanoma in skin lesions(IEEE, 2022-10-27) Jooravan, Amith; Reddy, Serendra; Pillay, NelendranReliable and accurate classification of a skin lesion is essential to the early diagnosis of skin cancer, especially melanoma. Traditional classification methods require performing a biopsy on the lesion. The overlap of benign and malignant clinical features may lead to incorrect melanoma diagnosis and/or excising an excessive number of benign lesions. This paper focuses on the use of machine learning to aid physicians with the non-invasive classification methodology of skin lesions, whilst prioritising the minimization of false negative classification. The clinical features used are based on the ABCD rule, representing the asymmetry, border, colour and diameter of the lesion. The dermoscopic images chosen are of melanoma lesions less than 0,76mm in thickness which corresponds to the early stages of cancer. The investigated classification methods include K-Nearest neighbours (KNN), Naïve Bayes and linear support vector machine. (LSVM). This research proposes the use of a LSVM machine learning algorithm to classify a skin lesion as being either melanoma or non-melanoma with the lowest false negative rate of the investigated classification. HassanAdvancement in the design of pavement structures in the recent decade has brought about the use of finite element modelling (FEM) tools. Numerical simulation of flexible pavement through these models are yielding positive results and enhancing pavement design year after year. Various factors contribute to this success; yet, material characterization model in FEM is a major/critical factor. However, in using FEM, there are various material characterization input methods which are; input through laboratory testing; secondly, through correlation and lastly a backward calculation from deflection measurements. Overall, input methods are more realistic and give a better understanding of the mechanical behaviour of the material, nevertheless quite difficult to obtain. Although, the use of fly-ash stabilizer in pavement structure is not new yet its use has not been fully implemented in FEM design. As a result, a comparative study is considered based on input and correlation parameters on fly ash stabilized flexible pavement using Abaqus. Furthermore, the results show that the material input method provides better results and gives some amount of certainty on the design life of the pavement.
