Item Academic integrity in the information age : insights from health sciences students at a South African University(Emerald, 2024-01-01) Kell, Colette Melissa; Thandar, Yasmeen; Bhundoo, Adelle Kemlall; Haffejee, Firoza; Mbhele, Bongiwe; Ducray, JenniferPurpose Academic integrity is vital to the success and sustainability of the academic project and particularly critical in the training of ethical and informed health professionals. Yet studies have found that cheating in online exams was commonplace during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the increased use of online and blended learning post-COVID-19, an understanding of student cheating dynamics is essential for developing effective strategies to combat academic dishonesty in the rapidly changing educational landscape.Design/methodology/approachThis study explored academic integrity and reasons for dishonesty from the perspective of health sciences students at a South African University of Technology (UOT) via the Fraud Diamond. To gain an in-depth understanding of the topic, a qualitative method was employed, and data were collected via focus group discussions with nine student class representatives. These data were analysed thematically using the Clarke and Braun approach.FindingsCheating during online assessment was common and innovative, with students manipulating others and exploiting friendships to facilitate dishonest practices. Student motivations for dishonesty included a lack of consequences and pressure due to a lack of time management, engagement and preparation.Practical implicationsThis study underscores the need for institutions to adopt an adaptable, multi-faceted approach that addresses student cheating opportunity, motivation and normalisation of dishonest practices whilst strengthening academic integrity policies and enforcement thereof.Originality/valueThe findings contribute valuable insights into the ongoing academic integrity crisis in higher education in the South African context.Item Creating an instrument to measure perceptions about access to health-related higher education programmes in South Africa(Stellenbosch University, 2020-12-04) Orton, Penelope Margaret; Essack, Sabhia; Nokes, Kathleen M.; Brysiewicz, PetraBackground: The South African government has created countless policies that support the need to admit and graduate students who had been excluded from health-science programmes in higher education settings during the apartheid era. Objective: to develop a questionnaire that could be used by various stakeholders to obtain their perceptions about access to health sciences education in higher education settings. Method: A mixed methods design was used; the qualitative stage allowed for the identification of themes while the quantitative stage used measurement theory, to develop an instrument based on those themes. Results: The overarching theme was Achieving equity of access for success is multi-factorial and has diverse & complex challenges and eight sub-themes emerged which were used to create a 17-item questionnaire that has good content validity and reliability (Cronbach alpha=.767). Conclusion: Further psychometric testing with larger, more diverse samples will result in a refined instrument that can be administered to various stakeholder groups, such as current and potential health sciences students and faculties, and used in programme evaluation. Health science programmes can use the instrument to measure access within different disciplines and possible changes over time as innovations are piloted. Different health sciences programmes can be compared and contrasted and objective data can be used to make systematic organizational changes.Item Teachers’ choices of teaching methods for environmental education : a case study of life skills teachers at a primary school in South Africa(African Journals Online (AJOL), 2021) Ruthanam, Melishnee; Reddy, Poovendhree; Pillay, DaisyThe success of environmental education has been attributed to several factors including teachers’ competencies and attitudes, teaching methodologies, availability of resources, and curriculum design. Many researchers in environmental education suggest that innovative and resourceful teaching approaches may translate into meaningful environmental education. This study provides an insight into the influence of this on environmental education in a South African classroom through a qualitative approach. Interviews were conducted to understand the teaching approaches used in the subject of Life Skills. The findings of the study suggest that the pedagogical content knowledge and identity of the teacher are determining factors for teachers’ pedagogical choices. This paper suggests that it is not the resources that are crucial to learning, rather the presence of a resourceful teacher. A resourceful teacher is able to introduce innovation regardless of the availability of teaching resources. This information could inform pre-service teacher training programmesin focusing on the development of a resourceful environmental education teacher.
