Item Investigating a virtual queueing system for Durban University of Technology : a comprehensive review approach to improve efficiency(IEEE, 2024-03-07) Deoraj, Saurav; Essop, Mohamed Shakur; Julius Aroba, Oluwasegun; Prof Milham, RichardIn response to the increasing demands placed on educational institutions, there is a clear need for technological advancements that can enhance the student experience while maintaining data security. This article describes the development of a Virtual Queueing System (VQS) specifically designed for the Durban University of Technology (DUT) to tackle these challenges strategically. The proposed system aims to minimize physical waiting times, ultimately enhancing the overall student experience. To ensure student information remains private and secure, the system incorporates a robust multi-layered security protocol. The goal of this research is to provide recommendations for enhancing service quality, ensuring data security, and reducing wait times across various industries that utilize virtual queuing systems. The findings from this research demonstrate the potential of digital solutions in positively transforming educational institutionsItem Challenges impeding women into leadership roles in a student-led organization at the South African higher education institution(Business Perspectives, 2021-12) Jali, Nokwanda; Suknunan, Sachin; Bhana, AnrushaThe study shows that a patriarchal society where women are still in the minority when it comes to leadership positions is still dominating. A few studies are exploring the role of women in leadership in government and industry, and very little focus is paid on higher education institutions and more especially – from a female leadership perspective. Therefore, this paper aims to determine the factors that hindered female students from attaining leadership positions and simultaneously make recommendations to create more leadership opportunities in a nationally recognized student-led organization known as the Student Representative Council at a large public South African higher education institution – the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The target population was 16 female leaders who served in the University’s Student Representative Council from 2019 to 2020 of which 13 had responded. A qualitative approach was followed and interviews were conducted. The study employed inductive qualitative thematic analysis using NVIVO 12. Findings revealed that the Student Representative Council structure at the university was patriarchal with little commitment to gender equality. Males outnumbered women in leadership roles. Portfolios assigned to women were mainly administrative rather than leadership. Females were subjected to stereotypical behavior. The study recommended ways to promote female student leadership whereby policy and constitution change is required to facilitate gender equality and the implementation of quotas. Women should be empowered to enhance their leadership skills via effective leadership development programs specifically designed for females to address the leadership gap between males and females.Item Application of stakeholder management for business sustainability in the higher education sector(Kamla-Raj, 2016) Khanyile, Makabongwe; Green, PaulUniversities have not been able to manage their stakeholder identification and salience correctly, nor to establish the needs of each stakeholder. Stakeholder analysis is deliberately considered as the most important part of university management and marketing, and universities are required to take care of their key stakeholder groups and build long-term relationships with them. The study sought to determine how the university identified and managed stakeholders for its Research and Innovation Month. This single exploratory case study situated in a qualitative paradigm used interviews, questionnaires and a literature review to collect relevant data. This study found that the university, through the Research and Innovation Month, has created a platform for collaboration and partnerships, as well as intellectual engagement. In addition, the study found that the university looks at four components in stakeholder participation.Item Perceptions of research structures and service quality within various faculties at Durban University of Technology: staff and students perspective(Business Perspectives, 2016) Ngibe, Musawenkosi; Lekhanya, Lawrence MpeleIn order to compete, retain and attract postgraduate students, and overcome the lack of postgraduate throughput, universities of technology need to be more customer orientated. Therefore, to gain competitive advantage, university management needs to identify and assess the service quality gaps in research support structures and analyze the impact they have on students and staff within the university. The purpose of the study is to investigate the perceptions of staff and postgraduate students with regard to research structures and service quality support by relevant offices with specific reference to Durban University of Technology. Data were collected from academic staff and students across six faculties at the Durban University of Technology. The sample consisted of 278 academic staff and 260 postgraduate students, using a simple random sampling. A mixed method approach of qualitative and quantitative techniques was used, with a closed and open-ended questionnaire developed, by adapting the SERVQUAL instrument developed by Parasuraman et al. (1985), to evaluate and assess the quality dimensions (gap) for reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy. The findings of the study indicated that staff and students were dissatisfied with the research support structures across six faculties. Further research should aim at assessing performance management of research support structures and service within the relevant research offices.Item Prioritising factors influencing service quality at Durban University of Technology: AHP approach(Kamla-Raj, 2014) Ramroop, Shaun; Green, PaulThere have been numerous studies conducted on the evaluation of service quality at universities. However, there remains a deficiency on using a multi criteria decision making approach in determining factors to consider for the improvement of service quality at a university. The purpose of this paper is to report on the use of Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) as a decision making tool in determining factors to consider for the improvement of service quality at a university. The study adopted a mixed method methodology and an action research approach was employed using a case at the Durban University of Technology. A purposive convenient sample of 30 participants was used.Data was collected via questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. The data was captured inthe software Expert Choice and the results were processed by taking the aggregated group judgements as the geometric mean of the individual comparisons. The findings reveal that organisational and educational issues are paramount to providing an effective service at tertiary institutions.Item A comparison of University academics job factors : satisfaction and dissatisfaction(IFRD, 2014-06) Basak, Sujit KumarThe aim of this paper is to compare the university academics job satisfaction factors and job dissatisfaction factors. This aim is achieved by identifying the factors that affect academics job satisfaction and dissatisfaction. The main results of this study were concluded by comparing the satisfaction factors and dissatisfaction factors for university academics from the existing literature. The novelty of this study is the use of a significant body of the existing literature has focused on the factors affecting university academics in terms of job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction to get the aim. The findings would help to know for university academic factors affect for satisfaction and dissatisfaction.
