    Impacts of Information Communication Technology (ICT) on effective teaching and learning among undergraduate students in selected university

    The role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has been acknowledged in knowledge-sharing not only within educational institutions but across different facets of society. The outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic made the role of ICTs crucial in the teaching and learning process, especially at the university level. Therefore, this study investigated the impacts of information communication technology (ICT) on effective teaching and learning among undergraduate students in a selected Nigerian University. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study covered undergraduate studying in the sixteen faculties at the selected university. Three research questions were raised, while two hypotheses were formulated. The sample of the study was 480 undergraduates. The sample was made through the use of simple random sampling techniques. Therefore, 30 undergraduates were selected from each of the sixteen faculties. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as simple percentages and inferential statistics of spearman’s’ Rank-Order. The two hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study's findings show that ICT tools are available to a great extent in the selected university and are frequently used among students to improve learning activities. Based on the findings, the study recommends that stakeholders at the selected university and other universities should intensify efforts at utilizing ICTs in the teaching and learning process for effective teaching-learning process.

    Inquiry reading and ICT integration for alleviating secondary students’ comprehension underachievement in Nigeria

    Reading is very important in determining success and worth of school and academic work. One of the skills of reading is comprehension skill. However, the poor performance of Nigerian students in English Language Public Examinations has been located partially in their lack of reading skill. Scholars have raised concerns about the effectiveness of teaching comprehension skills in schools. Recent effort in addressing the problem involves the use of information and communication technology devices with proven comprehension strategies. This paper provides additional information to show evidence for the effectiveness of technology in reading instruction with the use of inquiry strategy. It was suggested that English Language teachers in public secondary schools should be trained with the use of modern ICT tools

    The cultural context of naming systems amongst the Yoruba of South-West Nigeria

    Personal naming practices amongst the Yoruba of the south-west region of Nigeria are of diverse cultural importance and have significant implications for an individual?s place in society, role in the community and course of life. The cultural dynamics involved in the naming process include aligning the person?s name with the context of their birth. For example, the name of a child may have its origin in the seasons (i.e., planting seasons), important days (i.e., market days), critical historical events (i.e., Nigerian civil war), the order of birth patterns and occupation of the child?s relatives. The naming of a child could influence the rest of his or her life. In this context, there are cultural beliefs that the name of a child may predict childhood and adult behaviour. For example, names with negative connotations may negatively impact the entire life of that child. The names given to children within the Yoruba community of South West Nigeria are mostly culturally significant. While the onomastics of diverse communities have been explored in the African context, this article seeks to review literature published on the cultural context of the naming processes amongst the Yoruba of South West Nigeria. The author provides information gathered from independent interviews with individuals and the study was undertaken in different locations in Ibadan, Nigeria. The participants were selected through purposive sampling and semi-structured interviews were used which led to participants discussing the topic in more detail.

    Information and communication technology as a blended-learning tool for sustainable development for university students

    The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a blended-learning tool into traditional classroom-based teaching and learning has been shown to improve students' academic performance at globe and is essential to economic development. These claims were investigated in a sample of undergraduate students at the faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Based on the goals of the research, a purposeful sample of students was chosen. It used a mixed-method survey design. A total of 117 students completed the online survey (quantitative component); while a focus group interview with 4 students (qualitative component) was conducted. The findings showed significant barriers to, and affordances of, the use of ICT as a blended-learning tool. In addition, the study discusses student access to ICT devices and internet facilities on campus, student proficiency in using these devices and facilities, and the impact these have on students’ academic activities. Finally, conclusions and recommendations are discussed in the context of graduate career opportunities and national economic sustainable development

    The importance of systemic support for student-driven social media learning on campus in Nigerian universities

    The use of social media during the COVID-19 pandemic has emerged as a critical factor for academic continuity on university campuses globally. This paper reviews the use of social media as a learning tool among a undergraduates sample of students from selected Nigerian universities during this pandemic challenges period. A set of online survey Google forms was self-designed and used to explore how undergraduate students learn and concentrates on their academic activities during this pandemic. A sample size of 450 was purposively selected from the three universities, but only 153 online survey responses were valid for the data analysis. Descriptive statistics of frequency, mean and standard deviation were used in analysing demographic variables and research questions. The research findings indicated that students were ready for the new change to digital learning with their academic performance. Researchers recommended that both the academic community and government should support building resilient social media networks on campus among students and lecturers, including skills development and ready access to devices and the internet.
