Item A study of the efficacy of manipulation as opposed to cryotherapy and manipulation in the treatment of tension-type headache(1997) Angus, Antony Keith; Parkin-Smith, G. F.The purpose of this investigation, was to determine what role cryotherapy plays in conjunction with manipulation headaches.Item The efficacy of strain counterstrain mobilization in patients with painful hallux abducto valgus bunions(2000) Broodryk, Marie; Mathews, RobertThe purpose of this prospective, randomised, placebo controlled study was to determine the efficacy of strain counterstrain mobilization in patients suffering with painful Hallux Abducto Valgus Bunions (HAVB). The mobilization group received strain counterstrain mobilization while the placebo group received placebo laser. The study involved sixty patients; thirty in each group, which were selected from the general population. Each patient was treated five times within a three week period.Item The relative effectiveness of spinal manipulation versus spinal manipulation in conjunction with low back strapping in the treatment of mechanical low back pain, in the dysfunctional phase(2000) Broughton, Amanda Lynne; Kretzmann, HeidiThe absence of tested theory has resulted in a continued variation in protocols for the treatment of mechanical low back pain. This study was designed in order to determine the relative effectiveness of spinal manipulation versus spinal manipulation in conjunction with a low back strapping in the treatment of mechanical low back pain in the phase of dysfunction.Item The efficacy of adjusting the ankle in the treatment of subacute and chronic grade I and II ankle inversion sprains(1999) Pellow, Justin Edward; Brantingham, James W.To investigate the efficacy of adjusting the ankle in the treatment of subacute and chronic grade I and II ankle inversion sprains. The researcher hypothesised that adjusting a symptomatic ankle, in terms of the above, would result in a more significant improvement than that of a placebo treatmentItem A study to determine the efficacy of chiropractic spinal adjustments as a treatment protocol in the management of infantile colic(1999) Mercer, Catherine Anne; Jones, Andrew D.Infantile colic is a common condition in paediatric practice (Larson & Ayllon 1990) with very little consensus in medical circles as to its aetiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis (Pinyerd & Zipf 1989). The purpose of this study is to ascertain the therapeutic efficacy of chiropractic spinal adjustments in relieving the symptomatology of infantile colic.Item The efficacy of detuned ultrasound compared to proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation of the gluteal musculature both used in conjunction with manipulation in the treatment of sacroiliac syndrome(2001) Paton, Jaqueline; Myburgh, CorneliusThe purpose of this study was to determine the relative efficacy of chiropractic manipulation used in conjunction with detuned ultrasound over the gluteal muscles compared to manipulation used in conjunction with proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation stretching of the gluteal muscle group in the treatment of sacroiliac syndrome. It was hypothesised that both treatment groups would be effective in the treatment of sacroiliac syndrome but that manipulation used in conjunction with proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation of the gluteal musculature would be more effective than manipulation used in conjunction with detuned ultrasound, in terms of subjective and objective clinical findings.Item The effectiveness of manipulation combined with static stretching of the gastrocnemius-soleus complex compared to manipulation alone in the treatment of subacute and chronic grades I and II ankle inversion sprains(2001) Needham, Kim Jane; White, Horace LindsayThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative effectiveness of chiropractic manipulation alone compared to chiropractic manipulation in conjunction with gastrocnemius and soleus stretching in the treatment of subacute and chronic grade I and II ankle inversion sprainsItem The relative effectiveness of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (meloxicam) versus manipulation in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee(2001) Tucker, Mark L.; Myburgh, CorneliusThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative effectiveness of manipulation versus meloxicam (a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug) to determine which is more beneficial in treating osteoarthritis of the knee. This was a prospective, randomized clinical trial consisting of a population of sixty voluntary subjects, diagnosed as suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee. The patients were divided equally into two groups of thirty, with Group A receiving chiropractic manipulative therapy on eight consultations over three weeks, and Group B receiving meloxicam 7,5mg tablets once daily for three weeks. Capturing of the subjective and objective data for both groups took place on the first, fourth and eighth consultations. Subjective data was captured using the Numerical Pain Rating scale-l 01, the Visual Analogue scale, as well as the Patient -Specific functional scale. Objective data was gathered from goniometric and pressure algometer measurements.Item A study of the effects of chiropractic therapy on the diameter of the spinal canal of patients with low back pain and radiculopathy(1996) Beira, Bradley Stuart; Peers, Anthony V.Focus during this investigation was directed towards determining alterations in the size of the lumbar intervertebral disc in patients symptomatic with low back pain and sciatic distribution pain, in response to chiropractic management of this condition. The efficacy of chiropractic management for low back pain with associated radiculopathy has been examined. Flexion distraction technique and side posture rotatory adjustment technique of the lumbar spine have been used during this trial.Item The perceptions and attitudes of South African physiotherapists about the chiropractic profession(2004) Hunter, John Samuel; Korporaal, Charmaine MariaChiropractors and physiotherapists treat a common pool of patients, often using similar modalities to treat them, yet there has always been an apparent antagonism towards each other as recorded in the literature. This is therefore assumed to be true in the South African context; however there has never been any quantifiable evidence as to what the interprofessional ties are between these two professions in this context
