Item Determination of the antimicrobial properties of Withania somnifera and Xysmalobium undulatum plant tinctures in terms of the disc diffusion assay and the agar dilution sensitivity test(2007) Motara, Farhad EssopThis study was designed to investigate the antimicrobial efficacy of Withania somnifera and Xysmalobium undulatum plant tinctures in 62% ethanol in inhibiting the in vitro growth of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus.Item A controlled in vitro study of the effectiveness of the plant tinctures, Commiphora molmol, Hydrastis canadensis and Warburgia salutaris against Candida albicans using the disc diffusion assay(2004) Budree, Rohan SewdayalThe aim of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of Commiphora molmol tincture prepared in 86% v/v ethanol, Hydrastis canadensis tincture prepared in 62% v/v ethanol and Warburgia salutaris tincture prepared in 62% v/v ethanol against Candida albicans (C. albicans) with 62% v/v ethanol, 86% v/v ethanol and fluconazole as the control agents, and to determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration/s (MIC/s) of the effective tincture/s using the disc diffusion assay.Item A comparative study of the nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of Kalium Bichromicum 12CH manufactured from 3CH and 4CH triturations respectively(2005) Botha, IzelThe purpose of this study was to compare the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectra of Kalium Bichromicum 12CH, which have been potentised using Hahnemannian methods, from initial 3CH trituration or 4CH trituration.Item A study comparing the anti-microbial effectiveness of a water-based preparation of echinacea purpura to that of an ethanol-based preparation on the vitro growth of candida albicans and escherichia coli(2004) Singh, Veeran RameshThe purpose of this study was to compare the effect of a water-based extraction of Echinacea purpura (E. purpura) on the in vitro growth of Candida albicans (C. albicans) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) to a control of distilled water in terms of the size of the zones of inhibition. It also sought to compare the results to those obtained from experiments using ethanol-based tinctures of Echinacea purpuraItem The efficacy of ProgestoNat cream in the treatment of menopausal syndrome(2003) McTeer, TarynThis double blind, randomised, placebo controlled study investigated the efficacy of ProgestoNat® cream in the treatment of menopausal syndrome in terms of subjective and objective data. Menopause is defined as that point in time when permanent cessation of menstruation occurs following the loss of ovarian follicular activity. The perimenopause is the period just prior to the final menstrual period and is associated with the development of typical oestrogen deficiency symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings and loss of libido, to mention a few. The most widely used treatment for these symptoms is hormone replacement therapy. This form of treatment is effective for many women, but there are many risks and side effects associated with its use and there is a growing demand for natural alternatives, like natural progesterone creams. It is for this reason that the efficacy of ProgestoNat® cream was investigated as a natural alternative to hormone replacement therapy.Item A study investigating the efficacy of a homoeopathic complex (Hydrastis canadensis 9CH, Kalium bichromicum 9CH, Sambucus nigra 9CH) on the treatment of chronic sinusitis(2003) Ebrahim, SheraChronic Sinusitis is defined as a condition manifested by the inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses, fluids within these sinuses, and/or the underlying bone (Lanza and Kennedy, 1997). It is diagnosed if the condition has been present for 4 weeks or more (Carr, 2001). The demand for non-invasive, harmless and successful treatment for this condition is quite evident and increasing (Mayo Health Clinic Oasis, 2000). The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of a homoeopathic complex in the treatment of chronic sinusitis in terms of the patients’ perception (Appendices C1 & C2) of the treatment. The homoeopathic complex used in this double-blind study was made up of Hydrastis canadensis 9CH, Kalium bichromicum 9CH and Sambucus nigra 9CH.Item The efficacy of nasosinus (hepar sulphuris calcareum D3, nux vomica D3 and pulsatilla pratensis D3) in the treatment of acute sinusitis(2004) Main, ShelleyThe purpose of this double blind placebo-controlled study was to determine the efficacy of Natura Homoeopathic Laboratory’s Nasosinus (Hepar sulphuris calcareum D3, Nux vomica D3 and Pulsatilla pratensis D3) in the treatment of acute sinusitis, in terms of patients’ perception of response to treatment.Item The efficacy of homoeopathic simillimum in the treatment of chronic sinusitis(2003) Ismail, ShaidaThe purpose of this placebo-controlled study was to evaluate the efficacy of homoeopathic simillimum treatment of patients suffering from chronic sinusitis, in terms of the patient’s perception of the treatment.Item The efficacy of the main miasmatic nosodes in the treatment of chronic sinusitis(2003) Dlamini, NomthandazoThe purpose of this double blind placebo controlled study was to evaluate the efficacy of the main miasmatic nosodes in the treatment of chronic sinusitis in terms of the patients’ perception of the treatment.Item A study of the proving of Naja mossambica with a subsequent comparison of an existing proven homoeopathic remedy; Naja tripudians in terms of the mental and dream symptomatology(2004) Smal, LornaThe aim of this comparative study was to determine the effects of the thirtieth centesimal (30CH) potency of the venom of Naja mossambica on healthy individuals with emphasis on the mental and dream symptoms produced by the drug, which were compared to those of Naja tripudians (an existing homoeopathic remedy) so that it may be prescribed according to the Law of Similars, as required by homoeopathic science.
