Item Exploring the factors contributing to low women participation in the KwaZulu-Natal film industry(AMH International Conferences and Seminars Organizing LLC, 2024-06) Buthelezi, Simphiwe Promise; Cele, Thobani; Nxumalo, Londeka Thandokuhle Mimi; Zondo, Nonkululeko Melody; Zondi, Bonginkosi WellingtonGlobally, there is a stark gender imbalance in the film industry, and this is true for the KwaZulu-Natal film industry. There is an underrepresentation of women in production and executive positions, suggesting barriers to entry that discourage women from pursuing a lucrative career in the film industry. A quantitative research approach and an online structured questionnaire were used as a guide to investigate the causes of the low representation of women in the KZN film industry. The target population for this study was 34 women in the film sector. This study offers valuable insight regarding the status of women's participation in the KZN film industry and the challenges they face in this sector. The results suggest that investors prefer males in the industry and the barriers to entry are favorable to those with financial muscle and connections which has limited women's participation in the industry. Common themes included lack of support, lack of long-term opportunities, lack of funding and limited resources, lack of strong women narratives in the film roles, nepotism, lack of connections, and sexual harassment. This study recommends that there is a need for the industry to foster more female-targeted local and international internship programs and the provision of mentorship programs that pair experienced female professionals with aspiring women in the film industry. Furthermore, there is an urgent need for the establishment of labor unions and policy formulation in the film industry to deal with issues of transformation, inclusivity, diversity, safety of women, and equality.Item Workplace inequality and discrimination on individual development and organisational performance, in selected hotels in Durban Metropolitan city, South Africa(2022) Vareta, Nyamupachari; Dlamini, Bongani InnocentOrientation: Workplaces today consist of many cultures, ages, genders, races, and ethnicities. This varied work environment offers prospects for employers to generate and encourage organisational strategies that value and manage diversity while eliminating workplace inequality and discrimination. This research explores employees’ subjective experiences of workplace inequality and discrimination within South African hospitality contexts. Research purpose: The aim of the research was to understand the implications of workplace inequality and discrimination on individual development and organizational performance in the South African hotel environment. Motivation: The nature of inequality and discrimination in the South African work context and its influence demands the review of the hotel working environment and influence changes to close the existing knowledge gap. Research design, approach, and method: A qualitative case study within the social constructivist/interpretivist paradigms culminated in in-depth, rich, and detailed descriptions of employees’ experiences in the South African Hotel Industry. Purposive sampling with the help of snowballing were used to recruit the participants. Data were collected using informal discussion, observation, and interviews. The interview guide consisted of 14 semi-structured open-ended questions. The interviews were conducted face-to-face, audio-recorded, and transcribed verbatim using computer REV transcription. I verified the transcriptions by listening to the audio and making corrections to ensure accuracy. Setting: Participants were recruited from two hotels in Durban City, KwaZulu-Natal. Data analysis: Data were analysed as recommended in qualitative studies. Structured data were analysed using inductive and deductive methods. Thematic analysis and computer software NVivo played a critical role in analysing and refining the results. The search, query, and visualization tools of NVivo effectively verified the networks and patterns in the data and interpretation of the context and identity of participants’ answers. Main findings: The findings identified four main themes: Recruitment and work experience; Emotions; Discrimination at work, and Inequality at work. The study demonstrates the hidden inequalities and discrimination within the industries (the hospitality industry in this case). However, participants confirmed that racism is a severe problem in hotels. The study highlights the experiences of Blacks within the toxic working environment. The research demonstrated the impact of workplace inequality and discrimination on individual development and organizational performance. Practical implications: This study provided valuable insights into the impact of workplace inequality and discrimination on individual development and organizational performance. Contributions/value-adding: The results of this research can be used by human resources managers to (1) create awareness and communication within individuals, organisations, and society regarding workplace inequality and discrimination. (2) insist that trade unions and the government must revisit their mandate to protect workers, irrespective of nationality. This research has shown that vulnerable employees: women, foreign workers, and school leavers are exploited in the hospitality industry. (3) implement training and development programmes to help employees improve their skills and meet the organization’s objectives.Item A discourse on the plight of South African women in the face of abuse and neglect(University of the Western Cape, 2021-10-25) Fagbadebo, OmololuAn upsurge in the rate of violence against women has an adverse effect on women in South Africa. Sadly, many South African women who are the victims of violent sexual conduct, such as rape and other forms of violent sexual abuse, have in part contributed to the prevalence of HIV/AIDS infection among women. Of the 7,7 million South African living with HIV/AIDS in 2018, 4,7 million were women, while another 69 000 were among the new infections. They are more vulnerable to HIV infections with 21,17 percent of women living with the disease. Using personal conversations, literature searches and documents for primary and secondary data, this article argues that value orientation that ascribes superiority to men has damaging consequences on the status of women. South African women are exposed to violent habitual actions of men that denigrate their womanhood. The article, therefore, submits that there is a need to reinforce civil society and strengthen the justice system for the protection and promotion of the rights and freedom of women. Aside from this, the government should increase its commitment to the enforcement of requisite legislative frameworks that safeguard the rights and freedom of women, and review punishments for any acts of violence against women.Item Interventions to minimize prejudice and discrimination against female child(2022) Qasmi, Faiza; Islam, Ashraful; Gunathilaka, Chandana; Raj, Roop; Lourens, Melanie ElizabethThe current article has been developedto minimize social prejudices and prevent girl child discrimination. It has been evaluated by collecting secondary data and different country considerations for girl child discrimination prevention. Secondary data analysis has been performed in the current article. Current concerning discrimination area of affecting girl child, intervention strategy and disclosure rate of discrimination cases for a different country. Intervention planning has been analyzed in terms of evaluating data of global commitment and intervention scheme impact for the girl child. Different discrimination prevention schemes and investment plans initiated by the government and mandatory education have been identified. From this analysis suitable future scope and recommendations have been suggested. Further, workplace discrimination was su pported by the law.This article uses a descriptive approach to reveal, particularly in terms of the legislative measures introduced, the social responsibility of business in a transforming society, more especially the transformation of the historically disadv antaged communities.Item Social justice in South Africa: law and the role of business(Athens Institute for Education and Research, 2015) Reddy, KarunanidhiThe far reaching and devastating effects of apartheid in South Africa, has burdened the nation with “unacceptably high levels of poverty, illiteracy and other forms of social and economic inequality” (Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008: Preamble). In view of the ravages of discrimination, particularly on the basis of race and gender, equality and the prevention of discrimination have played a significant role in post-apartheid South Africa. Clearly, apartheid resulted in discrimination in almost every aspect of social, political and economic life. The impact extended from much of the population being prevented from fair opportunities for business ownership and management and securing senior jobs, as well as obtaining access to goods and services. Many businesses were closed to them and instead, separate and inferior facilities were provided. Further, workplace discrimination was supported by the law. Hence, with the adoption of the 1996 constitution, there has been much discussion and debate about correcting these discriminatory practices and improving the socio-economic situation of the disadvantaged. Since much of these inequalities were as a result of unjust legislation from the past, it is not surprising that the attainment of the ideals of equality and a fair and just society has been directed towards the state. Clearly, the state had to carry much of the responsibility in removing the unjust legislation and introducing measures to prevent inequalities in the future and to redress injustices of the past. However, the attainment of the ideals of a society free of discrimination and injustice is not attainable without the application of such ideals to the private sector, i.e. individuals and business. This paper investigates the role of business in post-apartheid South Africa and its role in economic and social transformation. It examines the initiatives in place in terms of which business has a role to play, particularly, the prevention of discrimination by the business sector, Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE), corporate social investment, consumer protection, employment equity and the promotion of fair business practices. This paper uses a descriptive approach to reveal the social responsibility of business in a transforming society. It concludes that the impact of these initiatives for business in South Africa is far-reaching and that business has a significant role to play in the growth and success of the economy, and more particularly in the transformation of the historically disadvantaged communities. However, the initiatives in place have not had the expected result.
